Despite a strong player base, Marathon sales fall short of expectations.
"Marathon reaches 1.2 million copies sold, but early estimates suggest the game hasn’t delivered the impact Sony and Bungie were hoping for."
Marathon, the latest shooter from the renowned video game studio Bungie, has reportedly sold around 1.2 million copies across various platforms. However, estimates suggest that the game has not done as well as expected. Although the interest from players has been solid, the game has not performed as well as Sony and the developers were hoping.
According to the information currently available, the game has done well on the PC platform, where nearly 70% of the players have purchased the game through Steam. The game has been released on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles as well which last 30% belongs to, around 19% for PS5 and around 11% for Xbox.
Although the sales figures look good for the game, the situation is a bit different when we consider the overall cost and the expectations from the game. As a live-service extraction shooter from a renowned studio like Bungie, the expectations from the game were much higher. Although the gameplay has indeed been well-received by the players, the performance of the game has been described as "underwhelming."
The performance may also be affected by the fact that the game is a "shooter" and in addition to this, the game is also complex, and it has been suggested by some analysts that the interface is difficult for new players to understand.
We should also consider the fact that the game is still at a early stage of development. Although the performance may not be as expected right now, the game may still do well in the future. Similar to other live-service games, the performance of Marathon from Bungie may improve over time.
