“CONTROL Resonant leaked before release, but the reaction took an unexpected turn as piracy communities began urging players to support Remedy and buy the game.”

An early video game leak is usually one of the worst scenarios a development studio can face. Lost sales, spoilers and disrupted marketing plans are among the most common risks associated with a game appearing online ahead of its official release.

However, the situation surrounding Remedy Entertainment’s CONTROL Resonant took an unexpected turn.

After the game reportedly appeared online through unauthorized channels before its official release, parts of the piracy community began encouraging players to buy the game legally and support Remedy financially.

Rather than simply treating the leak as an opportunity to play the game for free, some users argued that Remedy was one of the studios worth supporting because of the quality and originality of its games.

CONTROL Resonant has also enjoyed a strong launch on Steam. The game reached more than 40,000 concurrent players shortly after release and currently holds a Very Positive user rating, indicating a strong early reception among PC players.

From piracy to calls to buy the game

According to IGN, discussion surrounding the leak quickly took an unusual direction.

Instead of celebrating the availability of an unauthorized copy, some members of piracy-focused communities began openly encouraging others to purchase CONTROL Resonant.

Posts and discussions across online communities featured users saying that Remedy deserved financial support, with several players claiming that seeing the game had convinced them to buy a legitimate copy.

For some users, the leak appears to have worked less like a substitute for purchasing the game and more like an unintended demonstration of what Remedy had created.

That does not mean the leak itself was harmless. Unauthorized distribution can still expose developers to lost revenue, spoilers and disruption to carefully planned launch campaigns.

However, the reaction around CONTROL Resonant highlights an unusual dynamic in which part of the audience that normally turns to piracy instead began advocating for the developer.

Remedy occupies an unusual position in the AAA Industry

Part of the reaction appears to be connected to the reputation Remedy Entertainment has built over the years.

The Finnish studio is known for games with distinctive visual direction, unconventional storytelling and experimental mechanics, including Max Payne, Alan Wake and Control.

CONTROL Resonant continues that approach by expanding the Control universe into a larger action-adventure RPG set in a paranaturally transformed Manhattan.

Players take control of Dylan Faden, who must confront a reality-bending cosmic threat while searching for his sister, Jesse Faden.

Remedy has described CONTROL Resonant as its most expansive game to date, with larger environments, supernatural traversal and more RPG-focused progression than its predecessor.

That creative identity has helped the studio develop a particularly loyal audience, even when some of its previous releases took time to build commercial momentum.

CONTROL Resonant is off to a strong start

The early Steam numbers suggest that CONTROL Resonant has already attracted significant interest.

According to SteamDB, the game reached an all-time peak of more than 40,000 concurrent Steam players within days of release.

That is considerably higher than the recorded Steam peak of the original Control Ultimate Edition, although direct comparisons between the two games should be treated carefully because the original Control launched first on the Epic Games Store before later arriving on Steam.

CONTROL Resonant has also received a strong response from Steam users, with the majority of reviews currently rated positive.

Whether the unusual wave of support surrounding the leak will translate into a meaningful long-term sales impact remains to be seen.

Still, the episode demonstrates something unusual: even within communities built around unauthorized distribution, Remedy appears to have earned enough goodwill that some players are actively telling others to pay for the game.

CONTROL Resonant is available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. A Mac version is scheduled to follow later in 2026.
