Although Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is officially scheduled to launch on October 23, players who pre-ordered the game digitally have been able to access its single-player campaign since October 16, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.
According to Steam data reported by TweakTown, the campaign has earned a “Very Positive” rating, with 92% of more than 3,400 user reviews being positive. That marks the franchise's best result on the platform in more than a decade.
Better reviews than recent entries
The difference compared to recent installments is significant. Black Ops 7 has 37% positive reviews on Steam, while Black Ops 6 sits at 45%. Modern Warfare 3 has 48%, and Modern Warfare 2 has 46%. Black Ops 3, released in 2015, reached 85% positive reviews and previously held the franchise's record on the platform.
Since early access began, the game has also spent three consecutive days at the top of Steam's global top-selling games chart.
Players have praised the story, cinematic missions, and pacing, with some calling it the best Call of Duty campaign in several years. The gunplay, graphics, and sound have also received positive feedback, while some players have admitted that they started the game with low expectations.
The campaign wraps up the story of the rebooted Modern Warfare series, which began in 2019. Its plot takes place during a fictional Second Korean War, triggered by an invasion of North Korea.
Critics have also responded positively. GamesRadar+ has praised the game's visuals, relentless pacing, and satisfying conclusion to a story that has unfolded over several years. Members of the game's cast have also taken to social media to thank players for their positive feedback.
Not everyone is convinced
The strong ratings apply only to the single-player campaign. The game's open multiplayer beta on Steam received a “Mixed” rating, with 45% of reviews being negative.
Some critics argue that the full retail price is too high for a campaign lasting around eight hours. There have also been minor complaints about optimization.
These ratings could change after October 23, when the multiplayer component becomes available alongside the game's official launch.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is coming to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam, Battle.net, and the Xbox app on PC.
