According to newly revealed reports, Bungie is reportedly planning significant layoffs, and Destiny 3 is currently not in active development, with the studio’s focus shifting toward Marathon. All of this sounds brutally bad for Bungie.
This all comes right after they announced that Destiny 2 is basically entering maintenance mode and ending active development.
Bungie is finishing major content for Destiny 2, but there is still no confirmed Destiny 3, while they are also moving all developers onto Marathon.
Reportedly, another wave of layoffs is being prepared at Bungie.
People are especially panicking because Bungie already had HUGE layoffs back in 2023, and then again in 2024 when EVEN 220 PEOPLE were fired! That's wild!
But the biggest problem is that Marathon did not explode in popularity the way they had hoped before. Reports say that Sony is not satisfied at all with the game’s performance, and that this is one of the reasons behind this whole chaos. The community does not understand how they could kill Destiny for an extraction shooter.
The real situation now is that Destiny was one of the biggest live-service franchises ever for years. But community burnout, content vaulting drama, declining player counts, bad management, and constant layoffs have slowly started destroying the momentum they had until now.
But the important thing is that Destiny 3 not being in active production does not necessarily mean it will never exist, it just means it has not been greenlit yet and is not the main project they are currently working on. There is no full development team behind it.
But honestly, the future of Bungie currently looks very unstable.
