Sony Group Corp. has confirmed the upcoming closure of Bluepoint Games, the Austin-based subsidiary celebrated for its high-profile remakes of PlayStation classics. The move, which follows a comprehensive internal business review, will result in the loss of approximately 70 jobs. A spokesperson for PlayStation announced the decision this week, noting that the studio is scheduled to officially cease operations next month.
The announcement marks a sudden end for a studio that had become a cornerstone of Sony’s technical strategy. In a formal statement, PlayStation representatives praised the Texas-based team for its craftsmanship and the exceptional experiences it provided to the global gaming community. Despite this acclaim, the studio became the latest casualty in a volatile period for the interactive entertainment industry as parent companies reassess their long-term development pipelines.

Founded in 2006, Bluepoint Games established an industry-wide reputation for its technical prowess in revitalizing legacy titles for modern hardware. The studio rose to prominence with sophisticated reconstructions of titles such as Shadow of the Colossus and the Uncharted series. Its success culminated in the 2020 remake of Demon’s Souls for the PlayStation 5, a critical and commercial hit that prompted Sony to officially acquire the studio in 2021.
Following the acquisition, Bluepoint’s role within the PlayStation Studios family appeared to expand. The team contributed significantly to the development of 2022’s God of War Ragnarök before pivoting toward a new project within that same franchise. Reports indicated the studio had been tasked with developing a live-service entry in the God of War universe; however, that project was reportedly canceled in January 2025.
At the time of that cancellation, PlayStation leadership stated it was collaborating with the Austin team to define a new creative direction. The decision to shutter the doors entirely suggests that a viable path forward could not be established during the recent business audit. The closure highlights the ongoing challenges facing specialized development houses as major publishers shift their focus away from high-budget remakes and experimental live-service models.
