"Battlefield 6 had a massive launch, quickly becoming the franchise’s biggest release. Millions of players joined during its first days, yet months later EA started layoffs."

Battlefield 6 had a massive launch, quickly becoming the biggest release in the franchise’s history. Millions of players jumped into the game during its early days, giving Electronic Arts a major win after years of rebuilding the series. But only six months later, the party hit a wall once news broke that EA was laying off some of the developers who helped create the record-breaking shooter.

According to reports, employees from multiple Battlefield studios were affected, including teams at DICE, Criterion, Ripple Effect, and Motive. EA says the layoffs are part of “internal restructuring and changes to team structure.” The company described them as “select changes - meant to better organize development resources.” This suggests EA is shifting teams to focus on future Battlefield projects and other upcoming titles.

At its peak in November, Battlefield 6 reached 22.5 million monthly active players across 37 markets and all platforms. By January of this year, the shooter still maintained a strong player base, holding nearly 9 million monthly active users, ranking it among the top 10 most-played games globally at the time. That month, Battlefield 6 outperformed other major multiplayer titles, including League of Legends, Rainbow Six Siege, Marvel Rivals, and Apex Legends, proving the franchise’s enduring appeal.

Even though the layoffs hit hard, EA emphasized that Battlefield remains one of its most important franchises. EA confirmed that "the Battlefield franchise remains a priority, and the multiple development teams across studios will keep collaborating on future projects."

Like many major stories in the gaming world, the news quickly sparked criticism online. Battlefield 6 was not only financially successful, but also a record-breaking launch for the franchise, which makes the layoffs harder for some fans to understand. Many players argue that "if a game performs this well, the developers behind it should not be losing their jobs."

At the same time, industry analysts point out that layoffs after large releases are not unusual. Studios often restructure teams once a major project is completed, even when the game achieves commercial success. Still, the situation highlights a growing tension in the gaming industry, where financial achievements do not always shield development teams from cuts.
