“Skydance has completed its $110 billion Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition, bringing Batman, Harry Potter and major gaming studios under one company.”

Batman, Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat and a long list of other major entertainment franchises officially have a new corporate owner. Paramount Skydance has completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, creating a new entertainment giant simply called Skydance.

The deal, valued at approximately $110 billion, brings Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery under the same corporate umbrella and gives the newly formed Skydance control over one of the largest collections of entertainment properties in the world.

The combined company now includes major franchises and brands connected to DC, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Looney Tunes, and many others, alongside Paramount properties such as Star Trek, Mission: Impossible, Top Gun, SpongeBob SquarePants and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

While much of the attention surrounding the acquisition has focused on Hollywood, streaming and the sheer number of major franchises now controlled by a single company, the deal could also have significant consequences for the gaming industry.

Warner Bros. Games is now part of Skydance

Warner Bros. Discovery brought a considerable gaming business into the deal.

Warner Bros. Games has been responsible for franchises and games including Mortal Kombat, Hogwarts Legacy and the Batman: Arkham series, while its portfolio of development studios includes names such as NetherRealm Studios, Rocksteady Studios and TT Games.

That means Skydance now has a substantially larger presence in gaming alongside the studios and projects it already controlled through Paramount and the original Skydance gaming operations.

The acquisition was not without controversy, and Paramount was not initially the only company pursuing Warner Bros. Discovery.

Netflix had previously reached an agreement involving Warner Bros. Discovery, but ultimately declined to increase its offer after WBD determined that Paramount Skydance had submitted a superior proposal.

Skydance now has major ambitions in gaming

For gamers, one particularly interesting part of the merger is that Paramount has already made it clear that it sees gaming as an important growth opportunity.

Earlier this year, the company launched Paramount Games Studio, bringing together its gaming operations, including Skydance Interactive and Skydance New Media, under a unified structure focused on developing games based on both its own franchises and external properties.

Its current gaming pipeline includes Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, an untitled Star Wars project being developed by Skydance New Media, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, and the psychological action-adventure Star Trek: Shadow Frontier.

With Warner Bros. Games now joining that portfolio, Skydance suddenly finds itself controlling or working with some of the biggest entertainment and gaming properties in the world.

The bigger question is what happens next.

With Mortal Kombat, Batman, Harry Potter, DC, Game of Thrones, Star Trek, TMNT and numerous other franchises now sitting under the same corporate umbrella, Skydance has the potential to become a significantly bigger player in gaming — provided it actually decides to invest in the studios and franchises it has just acquired.
