Making Baldur's Gate 4 was turned down by the creator of the very well-known game Baldurs Gate 2, because it would be "madness," as the creator himself said.
After the massive success of Baldur's Gate 3, many fans expected that a sequel would only be a matter of time and that they would eventually get to enjoy Baldur's Gate 4.
However, it turns out reality is a little different, because another studio that was offered the development of Baldur's Gate 4 decided not to make it. The reason is that they believe it's practically impossible to surpass what Larian Studios has already accomplished.
According to James Ohlen, one of the lead designers of Baldur's Gate 2, an executive director at Hasbro contacted him after Larian Studios stepped away from making a sequel and asked if he wanted to take over development of Baldur's Gate 4.
To everyone's surprise, James Ohlen turned down the offer and explained that trying to compete with Baldur's Gate 3 would, in his words, "be pure madness." He believes Larian Studios has years and years of experience, its own engine, and a team that was practically built for this type of legendary RPG. Because of all that, he thinks making a worthy sequel to Baldur's Gate 3 would be extremely difficult, almost impossible.
Most fans supported James Ohlen's decision. On social media and across the internet, many fans pointed out that it's better to wait for the right team than to rush a sequel that can't live up to everyone's huge expectations.
Baldur's Gate 3 didn't just win countless awards, it also set the bar so incredibly high that even one of the creators of Baldur's Gate 2 doesn't want to make its sequel because it's simply too risky and almost impossible to create something better than Baldur's Gate 3.
That alone says a lot about how challenging the development of Baldur's Gate 4 will be, and why Hasbro won't have an easy time finding a studio willing to take on such a difficult task.
