Age Verification is coming to PlayStation; ONLY SINGLEPLAYER

Sony plans, OR MAYBE EVEN ALREADY TESTS mandatory age verification for certain features on PlayStation, HOWEVER; not for playing games, but for communication and online interactions.
If you don’t verify your age, you won’t be able to use voice chat, messages in general, party chat, Discord voice on PlayStation ofc, nor stream on Twitch or YouTube.
However, you will still be able to play games, buy from the store, and collect trophies. If you don’t verify your age, PlayStation remains singleplayer safe, but the social part gets locked.
This is actually part of a much bigger trend coming to the entire internet.
There will be several options for age verification, such as a phone number, ID of course, but also face scan via camera. And all of that is handled by a third-party company, for example Yoti.
It will first roll out in the UK and Ireland, starting in summer 2026, around June. Later, a global expansion is possible.
Sony didn’t come up with this on their own, laws are pushing it, like the UK Online Safety Act.
The goal is to protect children online and control who has access to chat and content.
But it becomes controversial when it comes to privacy, because you need to provide ID, your face, and a phone number. People will obviously be like: “Why am I giving personal data just to play games?”
There’s also the risk of hacking or data leaks. If someone leaks ID images or face data, that becomes a huge problem.
The phenomenon of the slippery slope is the most important part, because today it’s just chat that’s locked, but tomorrow it could be games, or the entire account.
This isn’t just a Sony thing, the same is happening with Xbox, which already has something similar, the EU is creating age-verification systems, and even operating systems could introduce this, like Windows.
The internet is moving towards a “you must prove who you are” direction.
PlayStation is slowly introducing a system where without verification, there are no social features. And all of this is part of a bigger trend where anonymity on the internet is slowly disappearing…
