More than 90% of gamers have said that they do not want a digital future where games on physical discs no longer exist, but... It's very unlikely that Sony will change this decision.

After Sony recently confirmed that it will completely stop releasing new PlayStation games on physical discs starting in 2028, a survey was conducted among gamers. The result of that survey was very clear, with more than 90% of respondents saying they do not want a fully digital future where games are exclusively digital and physical discs are no longer sold.

At this moment, more than 13,000 gamers have participated in the survey, and as many as 90.2% voted against an all-digital gaming future. Only around 9.8% of respondents supported the transition to exclusively digital games.

However, despite that, it is very unlikely that Sony will change anything, let alone reverse its decision. The company has already explained that the move toward digital distribution is part of its long-term strategy and that the majority of customers now buy games exclusively through the PlayStation Store, rather than on physical discs.

On social media and across the internet, many players say their biggest concerns are game ownership and preservation. Many people fear that digital games could become unavailable in the future if servers or storefronts are shut down, while physical discs do not have that problem because you can replay them whenever you want. Because of that, many fans believe the industry still isn't fully ready for a completely digital model, given its current instability.

Even though the overwhelming majority of gamers don't want the end of physical games, it seems that the decision has already been made.

Sony believes that a digital future is inevitable, and this survey shows that the transition will be far more controversial than many expected. The question is no longer whether the industry will become digital, but how willing players will be to accept that change.
