WhatsApp is working on a redesign of its Android app, with the first changes focusing on the navigation bar and the position of Meta AI, according to a new report.
The redesign is still in an early stage of development, and the interface shown so far should not be considered the final version. In the available screenshots, the Meta AI button appears in two different locations, suggesting that WhatsApp has yet to finalize the layout.
However, the current design indicates that Meta AI could eventually become part of the main navigation bar rather than remaining a separate floating button above the option for composing a new message.
The navigation bar itself is also getting a refreshed appearance, featuring a more rounded, floating design and increased transparency. The new look appears closer to the interface used on WhatsApp for iOS, although it does not adopt the same level of transparency.
Meta AI could become more prominent on Android
Moving Meta AI directly into the navigation bar would give the AI assistant a much more prominent position within WhatsApp's Android interface.
WhatsApp has previously experimented with giving Meta AI its own dedicated section in the bottom navigation bar, as the company continues to explore ways of integrating its AI features more deeply into the messaging app.
The redesigned interface will also include a dark mode version.
The early design has been spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.38.10, indicating that the company is still actively testing different approaches to the new navigation experience.
Development could continue for several more weeks before the redesigned interface is ready for a wider public release. Since the feature is still under development, its appearance and functionality may change before WhatsApp makes it available to all users.
