China has just unveiled the newest and largest open-source AI model so far, called Kimi K3, which, believe it or not, outperforms the competition in several benchmarks.
Chinese company Moonshot AI recently introduced the new Kimi K3.
It is a new AI model with a massive 2.8 trillion parameters, making it currently the largest open-weight model in the world. According to the benchmark results released by the company, Kimi K3 outperformed models such as Claude Fable, GPT-5.6 Sol, and many other leading AI systems in several benchmark tests.
The most interesting part is that even though the model has 2.8 trillion parameters, it uses a Mixture of Experts (MoE) architecture. This basically means that only a portion of the model is activated for each prompt, making it faster and more efficient.

On top of that, Kimi K3 supports a context window of 1 million tokens, designed for complex tasks such as programming, research, and working with long documents. Moonshot AI also claims that it delivers top-tier performance in areas such as coding and various agentic AI tasks. The new Kimi K3 model has been released as an open-weight model, allowing researchers and companies to download and run it on their own infrastructure.
This has attracted huge attention across the AI community. Many AI experts praised the fact that such a powerful model is available as an open-weight release, while others pointed out that the superiority claims are mainly based on internal and specific benchmark tests. Because of that, independent testing will be needed to verify its real-world capabilities.
Kimi K3 has become the largest open-weight AI model so far and represents another major step forward for China's AI industry.
If the benchmark results are confirmed through independent testing, Moonshot AI could become one of the biggest competitors to leading American AI companies in the race to build the world's most advanced artificial intelligence models.
