“ChatGPT will begin testing image-based ads during AI image generation in the US as OpenAI says the service now reaches 1.2 billion users weekly.”

OpenAI will begin showing image-based ads in ChatGPT to users who generate images with the service. Testing will begin in late October, initially only in the United States and with a limited group of advertisers.

The ads will appear alongside images created by ChatGPT at the user's request. The company says they will be clearly labeled and separated from the generated image, and that advertising will not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.

The ads will be shown to users of the free version and lower-priced subscription plans. OpenAI introduced text-based ads in ChatGPT earlier this year and expanded them to India in August. The new type of advertising will initially be tested in the United States, with the company planning to expand it to other markets.

Alongside the announcement, OpenAI revealed that ChatGPT now reaches 1.2 billion people every week.

No Ads alongside sensitive conversations

OpenAI says ads will not appear alongside conversations that are emotionally sensitive or otherwise unsuitable for advertising.

The company has begun working with independent firms DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science, which will evaluate the safety of the environments in which ads appear. According to OpenAI, these companies will not have access to users' private conversations.

Advertisers will be able to measure campaign results through several specialized platforms, including AppsFlyer, Adjust, and Branch.

Advertising is one of the ways OpenAI plans to increase revenue beyond subscriptions. The company spends tens of billions of dollars annually on computing infrastructure required to develop and operate its artificial intelligence models.
