About

Windward is a single-player and multiplayer action role-playing game set in a procedurally generated nautical world. The player assumes the role of a ship captain in charge of exploring, trading, and battling across a vast ocean filled with rival factions and pirates. There is no fixed storyline to follow. Instead, the objective is to expand the influence of the chosen faction by capturing ports, aiding allies, and defeating enemies while progressing through increasingly challenging regions.

The core gameplay focuses on naval combat and exploration. Ships are controlled from a top-down perspective, with the player adjusting speed, turning with the wind, and firing broadsides to engage hostile vessels. Combat requires careful maneuvering, as the positioning of the ship relative to wind direction and enemy location determines both offensive and defensive success. Defeated ships and towns drop loot, which includes gold, resources, and equipment upgrades.

Progression is tied to experience points and loot collection. Players gain experience by completing missions, defeating enemies, and exploring new territory. Leveling up unlocks skill points, which can be invested in abilities such as improved sails, increased firepower, or enhanced maneuverability. Ships can also be outfitted with new gear, including cannons, hull reinforcements, and sails, allowing for a variety of customization options.

Port towns act as hubs where players accept procedurally generated quests. These missions may involve escorting merchant convoys, delivering goods, capturing enemy ports, or eliminating pirate threats. Ports also serve as trading centers, where resources can be bought and sold for profit. Capturing ports expands the influence of the player’s faction, gradually shifting control of the map and unlocking access to new regions.

The game also provides cooperative and competitive multiplayer options. Players can join others online to form fleets, complete missions, or fight rival factions. Multiplayer sessions share the same dynamic world progression, and teamwork is often required to capture larger and more heavily defended enemy strongholds.
