About
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 is an action role-playing game and the sequel to Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. Bloodlines 2 is more of a spiritual successor than a direct sequel, taking place in Seattle in the year 2024. The player assumes the role of a powerful elder vampire known as the Nomad who awakens from torpor in the modern day to find that another vampire, a detective named Fabien, has come to inhabit their mind. The Nomad, adopting the name "Phyre", must work together with Fabien to return the latter to his body, as well as unravel the mystery of a strange symbol on Phyre's hand which seems to be limiting their powers.
Unlike the original game, Bloodlines 2 takes place from a first-person perspective and features a more linear, focused storyline and world. Phyre's vampire clan, gender, facial features, and clothing can be customized, with additional clothing options unlocked throughout the game. The available vampire clans that Phyre can belong to are the Brujah, Tremere, Banu Haqim, Ventrue, Toreador, and Lasombra, each of which bestow Phyre with unique powers. While Phyre can use XP earned from completing objectives to unlock new skills native to their clan on a skill tree, abilities from other clans can also be gained by visiting representatives of those clans after collecting enough of the required clan-specific blood from NPCs. In conversations with NPCs, the player typically has a choice of multiple dialogue options to suit their playstyle.
In combat, Phyre uses their physical strength in conjunction with their clan's abilities and their non-clan-specific vampire telekinesis to lift and hurl objects to overpower their enemies. Guns dropped by defeated enemies can be lifted with telekinesis and fired at other enemies, but cannot be reloaded and are discarded after use. As blood is Phyre's lifeforce, lost health is recovered by feeding on NPCs, or by consuming a health elixir. Other elixirs which can be obtained include Blood Elixirs, which refill Phyre's ability charges on use, and Potency Elixirs, which temporarily empower Phyre's abilities.
Another key mechanic is the Masquerade, the veil of secrecy which prevents vampires from being discovered by humans and must be upheld at any cost. The Masquerade is threatened whenever Phyre exposes their vampiric nature to the public by using supernatural abilities or feeding in view of humans. If Phyre's vampirehood becomes too blatant, prompting the involvement of human law enforcement, the vampire authorities—the Camarilla—will step in, putting an end to Phyre themselves.
