About

TR-49 is a narrative-driven puzzle game centered on deduction, archival research, and text-based investigation. Set largely within the interface of a fictional WWII-era machine, the game places the player in the role of an operative tasked with locating and destroying a specific book hidden within the machine’s corrupted archive, under time pressure and external threat.

The machine, developed by former Bletchley Park engineers Cecil Caulderly and Beatrice Dooler, contains a vast collection of digitized books, academic papers, journals, and personal correspondence accumulated over decades. Its original indexing system has failed, leaving the archive fragmented and unreadable. The player must reconstruct this archive by identifying, cataloguing, and linking individual sources in order to uncover both the requested book and the broader purpose of the machine.

Gameplay revolves around navigating the archive via four-character alphanumeric codes, entered through a rotary-style interface. Each code corresponds to a document, though its title and contents initially appear encrypted. Documents include an archivist’s note containing contextual clues, which the player uses to deduce the source’s identity. By correctly pairing a document’s code with its title in an in-game notebook, the text becomes readable, gradually restoring order to the archive. The coding system follows consistent internal rules—typically combining author or publication initials with a year—which players learn and exploit to locate new material.

The archive's contents span a wide range of fictional material, including academic research, science fiction novels, literary criticism, and private letters. As players identify more sources, they uncover interconnected personal, professional, and ideological relationships among the authors. Particular emphasis is placed on the lives of the archivists themselves—Cecil, Beatrice, and their daughter Aliz—whose notes reveal personal tensions, family history, and the long-term consequences of their work.

TR-49 allows free exploration of the archive from the outset, enabling players to pursue leads in any order. This non-linear structure supports multiple investigative paths and endings, depending on which conclusions are reached and when. An in-game notebook automatically tracks discovered codes, titles, and author biographies, though players are encouraged to form their own hypotheses through observation and inference.

Narrative delivery is supported by voice acting and an original soundtrack, and players can communicate at any time with a handler via audio dialogue that reacts dynamically to their progress. Rather than traditional puzzles or mechanical challenges, TR-49 focuses on logical deduction, pattern recognition, and narrative reconstruction, presenting its mystery through the gradual assembly of texts and relationships within the archive.
