Thomas & Friends: Building The New Line is a single player, mouse controlled game for young children in which the player builds new branch lines on the island of Sodor.
After an introduction the player selects one of four engines from the engine shed, they then select a location and a track layout after which the lay the track on a bare patch of ground. Once the track has been laid the player can then decorate it with plants and rocks before selecting two items of cargo. That completes the track building phase, player then gets to drive their chosen engine around the track picking up cargo from one area and delivering it to another. Occasionally hazards such as a rockfall on the line or gophers undermining the track appear and these trigger animated scenes in which the hazard is removed.
When the player has finished playing with their track they are taken to the engine shed where their engine is cleaned, overhauled and decorated for the grand opening.
Sir Topham Hatt appears for the grand opening and he takes a picture which is saved for posterity along with other tracks created by the player.
