The Royal Trap: The Confines of the Crown is a traditional visual novel with a female protagonist, whose choices during the course of the game will lead to one of the fifteen possible endings.

As a companion and trusted advisor to prince Oscar of Ocendawyr, Madeleine Valois is responsible for grooming the young prince as a suitable candidate for royal marriage, her own feelings toward her childhood friend notwithstanding. During the aniversari of princess Cassidy of Gwellinor, heir to the nearby kingdom, the game of marriage becomes suddenly more complex as Cassidy's suitors clash first on the ballroom floor, and then accuse each other of organizing the kidnapping of the princess.

The Royal Trap is presented mostly in text on top of still pictures of the backgrounds and the characters present in the scene. Interactive options consist of choosing from possible replies during conversations. Game soundtrack has a number of tracks performed with classical guitar(s).
