About

Starward Rogue is an twin shooter with a strong roguelike flavor. You start by choosing a robot, each with its own perks, and a difficulty level. You usually carry a primary gun with infinite bullets, a secondary one which needs energy to shoot, some missiles, which must be collected, and some auxiliary items with many different effects.

You control the robot through five randomly generated levels in a spaceship, each consisting of many connected rooms of varying size. Each room contains a number of enemies who must be killed in order to open its exits; every time you enter a room your energy is refilled (and your shields, if you have any), but not your health nor your items. An automatic mini-map marks visited rooms and items you have seen in them, and teleport pads help you travel between rooms in the same level.

The ship can collect credits which can be used to buy items at selected shops, each with just a few items; collect experience which allows you to level up and acquire new perks, and collect health shards which eventually allow you to increase your max health. Some rooms, clearly marked before you enter them, have mini-bosses. To finish a level, you must beat the main level boss. Die anywhere, and you must start over with a new map. Beat the game enough times and you open extra levels with a new 'Super-Final' Boss.
