Spintires

Spintires is an off-road driving game. It does not focus on racing, but on the simulation of using an all-terrain vehicle to carefully navigate rugged terrain, particularly mud. On many occasions the vehicle gets stuck in the landscape and requires use of all wheel drive or in desperate situations a winch to continue. Damage deforms the vehicle, and the vehicle's weight, speed and acceleration has a direct effect on the terrain, for instance causing it to sink deeper.

The game has several maps such as a Coast, Flood, Plains, River, The Hill and Volcano. Vehicles range from a regular jeep to trucks and all-terrain vehicles with sixteen wheels. There is a proving ground where players can freely experiment with the different vehicles and options. This mode shows developer tools to quickly spawn and reload trucks, refill fuel and change the time from day to night and vice versa. The regular maps often have different objectives that require the use of attachments. The vehicles for instance need to carry and deliver loads and lumber. There is an in-game map available at all times.

Next to steering there are many driving elements to take into account. There is a gearbox in the bottom right side of the screen that needs to be dragged manually to shift. The differential lock causes all wheels to spin with the same speed. It does not affect fuel consumption and when it is off torque is applied to wheels that have contact with the ground. Enabling all wheel drive provides considerably more torque, to all wheels instead of just the rear axle, but at a fuel cost. Players need to take into account damage and fuel consumption, with regular refueling. Next to a winch, another truck can be used in difficult situations that repair or provide fuel, using add-ons. Most add-ons require the use of advanced controls to operate the mechanisms.

The game supports online cooperative multiplayer for up to four players and it has an editor. Maps have a 'fog of war' to uncover and certain vehicles only become available after discovering them on the map or completing missions.
