About

Shōgi is an adaptation of the Japanese chess variant for the Game Boy.

It offers a basic game mode that can be played against a computer or a human player, the latter both in a pass-the-Game-Boy mode on one machine or via link cable that connects two.

It also offers a puzzle mode that challenges the player to win from one of 60 different starting situations.

The playing field is shown from a top-down view and the pieces are marked by a single kanji (i.e. abbreviated from the traditional two) with the opponent's letters being upside down. Captured pieces are shown in pools to the right of the field. The game allows moving backwards and forwards through moves already taken, adjusting the AI level on the fly and restarting the current game.
