Shodan Morita Shōgi

23 August 19918

About

Shodan Morita Shōgi is a digital conversion of the traditional Japanese board game Shogi, one of many titles to bear the name of pioneering board game programmer Kazuro Morita. The game includes standard shogi play against a computer opponent at one of four different skill levels, including an extra-easy beginner's mode, as well as a "tsume shogi" solver tool.

The game's most notable feature is the Shodan Test mode; if the player can win three matches in a row against a high-level CPU opponent, and also complete a series of "next move" puzzles, they can earn an official shodan ranking from the Japan Shogi Association. This release was the first shogi game to include such a feature, which would also be included in many subsequent games.
