SanctuaryRPG is a turn-based, roguelike role-playing game presented in retro ASCII art, blending the tactical feel of Japanese-style RPGs with traditional dungeon crawling. The player takes on the role of a customizable adventurer exploring Westhaven to confront a malevolent entity known as the Matron, traversing a world where fantasy collides with sci-fi elements such as cyborgs and robotics pets. The Black Edition expands on the original with procedurally generated ASCII visuals, a chiptune soundtrack, and a wealth of stylistic and narrative touches.

Gameplay is powered by a combo-based combat system and strategic menu-driven exploration. Players choose from a vast array of class and race combinations, over 160 of them, and equip themselves from thousands of unique weapons and armor options. By default, the game features permadeath, significantly raising the stakes of each decision, though a softcore mode offers more forgiving gameplay by removing permadeath and reducing loot drops.
