Rusty Lake: Roots

Rusty Lake: Roots is a single-player point-and-click adventure game with puzzle-based progression. The story follows James Vanderboom, who inherits a mysterious seed after the death of his uncle. Planting it in the garden of his new home sets in motion a surreal chain of events that span generations of the Vanderboom family. The player guides James and his descendants through a series of interconnected scenes, revealing both the expansion of the family tree and the strange, often unsettling history tied to the Rusty Lake setting.

The game is structured into dozens of short vignettes, each representing a family member’s life event, from birth to death. While the player’s immediate goal is to complete each scene, the broader objective is to reveal the entirety of the Vanderboom lineage and its ties to Rusty Lake’s overarching mythology.

Gameplay is presented through static rooms and locations, each containing interactive objects and puzzles. The player explores by clicking on items, uncovering clues, and solving logic challenges that open new paths. Each completed puzzle unlocks a new branch on the family tree, leading to additional characters and scenarios. The progression system is non-linear, allowing players to move between branches once they are available. Puzzles range from simple item combinations to multi-step mechanical challenges, often involving symbolic imagery and recurring motifs.
