About

Rust is a multiplayer survival game. Players awaken naked on a hostile island with nothing but simple tools and must endure hunger, thirst, weather, wildlife, and other survivors. There is no central storyline. The overarching objective is to live long enough to build shelter, obtain technology, and defend it against both the environment and human opponents.

Survival begins with gathering wood and stone, crafting primitive gear, and securing food and warmth. Exploration reveals world landmarks known as monuments, many guarded by hazards such as radiation or armed non-player scientists. Better protection and equipment enable deeper runs into these sites for higher-tier loot. Respawns occur at random beaches or at player-placed sleeping bags and beds, which serve as personal spawn points after death.

Combat is frequent and lethal. Wildlife and roaming NPC events, such as the patrol helicopter, threaten geared players, but the primary danger is usually other survivors. Weapons range from improvised melee options and bows to firearms and explosives. Armor and clothing mitigate damage and, in some cases, resist radiation so players can operate in contaminated areas.

Progression centers on crafting and technology. Most items require learning a blueprint, either by researching an existing item with scrap at a research table or by unlocking along workbench tech trees across three tiers. Higher tiers gate advanced gear and raiding tools. Once learned, a blueprint is tied to the character on that server.

Base-building and defense are key systems. Players erect bases with building blocks, protect territory by authorizing at a Tool Cupboard, and fund upkeep to prevent decay. Fortifications, traps, and deployables help repel raids, while explosives and breaching tools allow attackers to break into rival bases. Server rules and wipe schedules shape the tempo of this cycle.

Secondary activities include monument “puzzles” that gate special loot, recycler stations that turn components into resources, and world events at locations like oil rigs and cargo ships guarded by scientists. Hazmat suits and other gear are often required to operate safely in high-radiation or end-game areas.

Rust is played on official and community servers that periodically reset progress. All official servers undergo a forced wipe on the first Thursday of each month, aligned with the game’s regular update cadence. Many community servers also use weekly or biweekly wipe schedules.

Rust began in early access, initially as a zombie survival game before pivoting away from undead enemies to focus on environment and player conflict.
