About
The first volume of Banned Footage is downloadable content for Resident Evil 7 which adds two playable videotapes and one bonus game. All the content is accessible via the main menu in "Extras" and can be played independently of the base game. Both video tapes feature Clancy, the cameraman who was the protagonist of Beginning Hour, and show what happened to him after he was caught by Jack Baker. The bonus game is an extremely difficult short story with all odds stacked against Ethan, the protagonist of the base game.
Videotape 1: Nightmare
Whatever happened in the Beginning Hour, it would appear that Clancy didn't escape to safety, or if he did, Jack caught up with him again. Having been tossed down into the basement, he is now told he has a few friends that are eager to meet him. The story starts with Clancy waking up in the incinerator room at midnight, with the goal to try and survive until dawn, meaning he needs to stay alive for five hours. The only thing next to him is a scrap dispenser producing metal scrap at regular intervals which Clancy can use to build weapons and items at the workbench. Clancy can traverse through the entire basement area to find other dispensers and activate them to increase his own chances of survival. Not all areas are accessible from the start however, and it takes a lot of scrap to make a key or something else that can help you open locked doors. The story is split into five segments, one hour each, where you literally fight waves of enemies that never stop coming at you. What's worse, every item or ammo you craft requires more materials the next time you want to craft it. At the end of each hour, you have a warning urging you to clear the enemies before the next hour continues, often bringing more dangerous monsters and bosses to fight at the end of each wave. Aside from crafting items, you can also use metal scrap for rigging traps or repairing automated machinegun turrets to help you deal with monsters. Upon completing the full five hours, an even more difficult mode becomes available. When you fail, the game evaluates how well you fared, providing you with various benefits on your next try depending on your overall score; those benefits can range from extra starting metal scrap or more destructive weapons being available, to having unlimited ammo. The game doesn't save progress after each hour, so dying means getting back to the very start.
Videotape 2: Bedroom
One of Marguerite's daughters took a fancy at Clancy, so mom is taking care of their new guest, starting with a delicious supper that she prepared just for him. She starts gentle, but gets very angry if she suspects you are not cooperating nor appreciating her cooking and her attentions. This story is entirely puzzle-oriented and involves no direct fighting, though if Marguerite gets angry, she will punish Clancy until he can't take it anymore and die. Puzzles don't change and what you find out before you die can be used on your next try until you minimize mistakes. You start the story by being locked to a bed with a supper of... something gross in front of you. Eating Marguerite's dinner is the same as stabbing yourself with a knife, but not eating her cuisine will require being clever so as to not anger her. For the first time in Resident Evil 7, there are dialogue choices when interacting with Marguerite. The goal is to avoid eating her dinner by outsmarting her, survive and escape the bedroom you find yourself locked in. This will just end one more horror for Clancy, only to deliver him into the next one seen in volume 2 of Banned Footage.
Extra Game: Ethan Must Die
As the name implies, this short game puts a lot of emphasis on the fact that Ethan must die, and he will many, many times until you learn exactly what to do, how to do it, and when to fight. Armed with nothing but a knife, you are tasked to kill Marguerite in the greenhouse. This is some kind of alternate version to what happens in the base game, only much harder to pull off since one strike by any monster will kill you. To help you on your quest, the game randomly places boxes with items you can crack open. How useful the item is will be displayed with a star rating above the box. However, boxes can also be rigged to blow up and that means instant death for Ethan, so cracking them open is a risk that is not always worth taking, especially after some ordeal where you barely managed to survive.
