Morita Shōgi 64

3 April 19985

About

Morita Shōgi 64 is a digital conversion of the traditional Japanese board game Shogi for one or two players, which is notable for allowing online network play using a modem integrated into the game cartridge. For a subscription fee, players were able to play shogi online against one another, participate in online shogi tournaments, and receive instruction from professional players. The game was also endorsed by the Japan Shogi Association, and allowed a player to earn an official shodan ranking by clearing a set of CPU matches and "next move" challenge questions.

The game also includes a standard local play mode against either a second player or a computer opponent of varying skill levels. There is also a practice mode where the player can set up a custom board layout to practice different scenarios, and a Tsume Shogi puzzle solver tool.
