About
Metal Gear Solid is a single-player stealth action game for the Game Boy Color.
The story takes place in an alternate continuity separate from the mainline Metal Gear series. A secret U.S. military initiative, Project Babel, has developed a new prototype of the Metal Gear weapon, a nuclear-capable walking tank. Before the program can be secured, the Gindra Liberation Front, a paramilitary faction based in the Central African nation of Gindra, seizes the prototype. Special agent Solid Snake is called out of retirement and sent to infiltrate the occupied fortress known as Outer Heaven. His mission is to recover the stolen Metal Gear and uncover the motives behind the insurgency, which threatens to destabilize the region and reignite global conflict.
Gameplay follows the top-down, stealth-based design of the original Metal Gear titles. Players must guide Snake through enemy strongholds, avoiding detection by patrolling guards and security systems. Enemy vision is represented by directional cones, and Snake can crawl, hug walls, or hide in shadows and crates to remain unseen. When discovered, guards pursue aggressively, forcing the player to either escape or fight. Combat is deliberately limited: while Snake can acquire handguns, rifles, and explosives, stealth remains the primary means of survival.
Progression is supported through a wide variety of weapons and gadgets. Snake can collect firearms such as the SOCOM pistol, suppressors, and grenades, as well as non-lethal items like cardboard boxes for concealment. Access cards unlock secured doors, while rations restore health. The game also features a radio communication system, allowing Snake to contact support characters who provide tactical advice and story exposition.
Boss encounters punctuate the missions, each requiring different strategies to overcome. In addition to the main story campaign, the game includes over 100 optional Training Missions. These self-contained challenges focus on stealth, combat, and puzzle-solving.
Although it shares the title Metal Gear Solid, the Game Boy Color release is not a port of the PlayStation game, but a standalone entry that combines elements of the classic Metal Gear gameplay with modernized systems inspired by Metal Gear Solid.
