About
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 Arcade Edition features 12 Olympic sports that can be played with up to 4 players or in a single player format where you'll compete to earn medals across four events. There are eight sports based on the Tokyo 2020 Olympics but, after finishing the first two sports, you'll be able to play one of the four retro sports based on the 1964 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Setting itself apart from the Nintendo Switch release, the Arcade Edition involves players utilizing a special arcade cabinet to more closely mimic the athletic feats on screen. The platform players stand on can detect when the player is running or has jumped, allowing for sports like the 100m Dash or Triple Jump to more closely mirror their real world counterparts. Some sports utilize three colored buttons on the cabinet as well, such as Sport Climbing where you must press the appropriately colored button to match the handholds you want to reach for.
Before beginning, players are able to pick one of 20 characters to represent them, 10 characters from the Mario franchise and 10 from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise available. The characters all have different statistical advantages or weaknesses, their Power, Technique, and Speed holding some sway over the maximum performance possible. An Easy Mode is also available where timed inputs are judged more leniently, and each Olympic Event has a challenge where performing well enough can allow the player to continue playing on their initial credit.
