About

LEGO City: Undercover is a single-player open-world action detectove game.

The story follows undercover police officer Chase McCain, who returns to LEGO City after a long absence to investigate the recent escape of master criminal Rex Fury. Tasked with tracking Fury across the sprawling metropolis, Chase infiltrates gangs, solves crimes and unravels a larger plot threatening the city’s peace. The narrative blends crime-drama structure with humor and parody, featuring numerous references to well-known action and cop films.

Gameplay takes place primarily within the open world of LEGO City, a fully explorable environment composed of multiple themed districts including Downtown, Auburn, Cherry Tree Hills and Bluebell National Park. Players can explore on foot or by driving a variety of vehicles such as cars, motorcycles, boats and helicopters. The central mechanic is Chase’s use of disguises, each granting specific abilities: the Construction Worker can break heavy objects, the Robber can open safes and doors, the Farmer can glide with a chicken, and the Astronaut can use a jetpack. These roles are gradually unlocked throughout the main campaign and are essential for progressing through missions, accessing collectibles and solving environmental puzzles.

In addition to the open-world exploration, the game contains 15 structured story levels that function as self-contained missions. These feature combat, platforming and puzzle-solving sections as Chase investigates different locations and confronts Rex Fury’s criminal network. Completing missions unlocks new disguises, vehicles and Gold Bricks, which are used to construct Super Builds - large interactive structures that expand access to new areas or bonus activities. Side activities include time trials, collectible hunts, vehicle challenges and civilian rescue events, contributing to 100 percent completion.

Secondary features include cooperative local play (added in the 2017 multi-platform re-release), allowing a second player to join as a partner in split-screen mode. The 2017 version also removes the Wii U GamePad dependency, replacing its scanning and map functions with standard menus.
