About
Initial D Arcade Stage 4 is the fourth iteration of the Initial D Arcade Stage series, based on the popular Touge manga and anime series. It is the first major installment of the series to be built from the ground up since the original game. The cabinet design, hardware and graphics are upgraded (using Sega's 16:9 HD-capable Lindbergh board, instead of the NAOMI 2 used in the first three versions), a new physics engine, item shop and card system (using IC instead of magnetic technology) are introduced.
One of the major innovations for the Arcade version is the introduction of online multiplayer via Sega's ALL.Net system. Through the Nationwide Matchup Mode, players can be matched against others across Japan based on battle rankings and performance data. The game retains key single-player modes such as Legend of the Streets, which follows the storyline of the Initial D manga and anime, as well as Time Attack and In-Store Battle, which allowed head-to-head races on linked arcade cabinets within the same location.
During the Story mode, Takumi Fujiwara competes against different characters from the manga in illegal street races. After a short banter, the race begins: it lasts around three minutes and the goal is to reach the end before the opponent. For the PS3 version the other modes are Time Attack and Online Play (free races and races which count against the online ranking). Outside the story mode, the tracks can also be customized: driving direction, wet/dry and day/night.
The game introduces a character creation and customization system, allowing players to design avatars that appear both in-game and in online leaderboards. This system was tied to the new IC Card, a replacement for the magnetic save cards used in earlier games. Styled like a driver's license, the IC Card can store player progress, up to three vehicles, and customization data. The vehicle tuning system is similarly overhauled—players now earned points through battles, which can be spent on performance upgrades and cosmetic enhancements.
Graphically, the game adopts a real-time watercolor shading style, giving the visuals a stylized look consistent with the anime. For the first time in the series, all characters are rendered in 3D and fully voiced by the original anime voice cast. Two new characters—Toshiya Joshima and Kozo Hoshino—are introduced, while several others from Ver. 3 were removed.
The game adds the Lake Akina course for the first time, along with new vehicles such as the Subaru Impreza WRX STi (GDBF) and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX GSR (CT9A). Overall, there are fewer cars and courses are available than Initial D Arcade Stage Ver. 3.
To complement the game’s release, Sega launched InitialD.Net, an online service that allowed players to view race results, national rankings, and manage in-game items and vehicle parts. Players can also use the service to form or join racing teams.
