About
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age is a single-player role-playing game and a remastered edition of Final Fantasy XII, originally released for the PlayStation 2. It revisits the world of Ivalice with updated visuals, orchestral music, and refined gameplay systems. The story unfolds in an age of conflict between the empires of Archadia and Rozarria, with the small kingdom of Dalmasca caught in their struggle. The player follows Vaan, an orphan from the occupied city of Rabanastre who dreams of freedom among the skies. His path crosses with Princess Ashe, the last surviving heir to Dalmasca’s throne, and a band of unlikely allies including sky pirates Balthier and Fran, loyal knight Basch, and Vaan’s friend Penelo. Together, they are drawn into a rebellion against imperial occupation and a deeper conflict over the destructive power of ancient magical stones known as nethicite.
Gameplay features a mix of real-time exploration and tactical battle systems. Players control one active party member while the others act automatically through programmable commands called Gambits. The Gambit system allows for conditional behavior, letting characters heal allies under certain health thresholds, target specific enemy types, or automatically cast spells when conditions are met. This automation supports fluid, real-time combat where positioning, target management, and resource efficiency are key. Players can pause at any time to issue manual commands or switch between characters during encounters.
Progression is governed by experience points, license boards, and equipment upgrades. Characters level up through combat and earn License Points (LP) to unlock abilities, magic, and weapon proficiencies on their personal boards. The Zodiac Job System, unique to this version, assigns each character two of twelve available job classes such as Knight, Black Mage, or Time Battlemage. This allows for specialization and strategic party building, emphasizing complementary roles and balanced skill distribution.
The world of Ivalice is presented as a large network of zones connected by seamless transitions, supporting both linear story progression and open-ended exploration. Towns provide markets, side quests, and story advancement, while the expansive fields and dungeons feature numerous enemies and hidden treasures. The Clan Hall and Hunts system introduce optional missions where players track and defeat powerful monsters, earning rewards, items, and prestige as a licensed hunter.
Outside of battle, secondary systems add depth to party management and customization. Espers, powerful summoned beings, can be unlocked through boss encounters and bound to specific characters for permanent use. Technicks offer non-magical skills like stealing, scanning enemy stats, or dispelling effects. Magic and weapons must be purchased or discovered, encouraging thorough exploration. Players can also adjust battle speed, turn off random encounters, and use the “Trial Mode” to fight through consecutive enemy waves for special prizes.
The Zodiac Age remaster introduces extensive enhancements over the original version. Visuals are reworked with high-resolution textures, improved lighting, and remastered cinematics. The soundtrack has been newly orchestrated, with options to toggle between new and classic arrangements. Gameplay balance has been refined, incorporating faster loading, an auto-save feature, and double or quadruple speed modifiers for exploration and combat. The interface has been modernized for widescreen formats, and on newer platforms, save data can be transferred across devices.
