About
FAR: Lone Sails is a side-scrolling puzzle platformer with vehicle simulation and resource management elements. The player controls a silent protagonist traveling through a desolate, post-apocalyptic environment in a building-sized vehicle that resembles some combination of a car, train, and boat. The objective is to continue moving forward across the barren landscape until the protagonist reaches their undefined destination. The game begins with the figure paying respects at a grave before departing on their voyage, and the narrative proceeds entirely without dialogue or text, conveyed solely through environmental storytelling and atmosphere.
The core gameplay revolves around maintaining and operating the massive vehicle. Players must manage multiple aspects of the machine simultaneously, including fueling the engine by collecting and burning objects found in the wasteland (crates, oil drums, books, etc.), manually triggering the ignition, releasing steam pressure for speed boosts, and deploying sails when wind is favorable to conserve fuel. The player must remain attentive, as components of the vehicle will occasionally catch fire or break down, necessitating use of the onboard water hose and repair tool. Occasionally, progression is halted by in-world obstacles, requiring the player to exit the vehicle and solve environmental puzzles to clear a path forward. As the journey progresses, the vehicle can be upgraded with new equipment for more efficient travel - a vacuum to collect fuel without stopping, for example.
The game's demanding and rhythmic maintenance loop centers on building the relationship between the player and the vehicle that serves as both transportation and shelter. The art direction utilizes a minimalist, muted color palette with occasional splashes of color, depicting vast industrial ruins and abandoned structures against expansive skies. The sound design features an orchestral score that alternates with extended periods of silence, often corresponding to transitions between longer vehicle travel sequences and exploratory puzzle platforming sequences.
