About
Dread Templar is a first-person shooter that takes inspiration from titles of the 90's, most notably Quake, through the character, weapon and environment design, shooting mechanics, a gritty visual style with crude pixel art textures, excessive violence and a hard-hitting soundtrack. At the same time it incorporates many modern elements such as upgrade system through blood gems called Dread Powers where character and weapon abilities can be upgraded and swapped to define a loadout, a bullet time mechanic to slow down time, headshots and dashing. The player's character is a templar on a quest for revenge, facing demons and dark forces.
The gameplay combines fast-paced shooting action with exploration and puzzle-solving elements. Players must navigate the levels, find keycards and other items, and solve puzzles to unlock new areas and progress through the game. The combat system features a variety of weapons, each with its own unique strengths and weaknesses, and a range of enemy types that require different tactics to defeat. Weapons include a katanas (both melee and throwable), pistols, SMGs, two types of shotguns, a bow, a weapon to trap enemies in an electrical field, the Hellfire Shooter (rocket launcher), the Hellfire Magnum (revolver) and the Hellfire Gauntlet (railgun with a large radius of damage). Levels contain small secrets and large ones that are hinted at through clues in the environment or by solving puzzles. There are also optional side areas with difficult sections and big rewards. Often bosses need to be defeated in large arenas. Some of the enemy types are Dark Apostles (wizards), spiders, Hell Knights as well as flying enemies. They use both melee and ranged attacks.
There are four difficulty levels and a separate wave-based Guardian survival mode with a currency where weapons can be bought between rounds. Levels feature save game points and the levels are grouped in five episodes each with their own theme and enemies. Once a level is completed it can be replayed from a level select menu right away. The game was released early to the public as it was still in development and received a full released one and a half year later.
