The Definitive Edition introduces several additions and refinements. Players can choose between 3D graphics and a 2D sprite-based visual mode reminiscent of earlier entries in the series. Orchestral and synthesized versions of the soundtrack are selectable. New story events expand character backstories, and additional side content deepens the narrative. Other enhancements include the ability to revisit past Dragon Quest worlds through special quests known as Tickington, presented entirely in retro 2D style.
