About

Blocks That Matter is a 2D puzzle game where the player controls a tiny Tetrobot. The robot was designed by two independent Swedish developers, Alexey and Markus, but they have been kidnapped to work for a large corporation. Their Tetrobot invention is the only one who can save them. Players guide the robot through the different levels to reach the exit. It can be moved around and can drill many different types of blocks to collect them. Once stored, the blocks can be recycled to design new constructions and they also each have their own qualities. This technique is reminiscent of the contemporary Minecraft and is used for most of the levels to get past obstacles and reach higher platforms. Blocks cannot be reconstructed randomly. They have to be laid out in patterns called tetrominoes. Only a single block can be drilled at a time and its disappearance often affects the blocks around it. In construction as well: wood and iron blocks are stable enough to stand on their own, but a sand block will not stand unless it is supported by another block.

At any time the puzzle mode can be activated. It pauses the game and overlays the screen with a green grid. Players can then design their constructions with the available blocks without pressure. By completing levels up to 40 Blocks That Matter are collected. These awards unlock new parts of the game and reference classic games where blocks play an important role, such as Boulder Dash for instance. Not all parts of the game are slow-placed. There are chase sequences with giant monsters and different types of enemies in general. In the execution of design, classic block games are often referenced next to the use of tetrominoes, by clearing a line of blocks Tetris-style for instance.

In the Adventure Mode the main campaign is The Underground Rescue. There are also Bonus Levels and a separate menu where the game' soundtrack is unlocked. In the Community mode players can create their own levels or play custom levels designed by others.
