About

Beautiful Desolation is a single-player isometric adventure game. The story follows Mark and Don Leslie, two brothers living in South Africa in an alternate 1980s where a massive alien structure has suddenly appeared in the sky. When Mark’s life is shattered by the appearance of this object, he and Don investigate and are pulled far into the future, into a world reshaped by alien technology and centuries of social upheaval. The player controls Mark as he searches for a way home, uncovering the fate of humanity and encountering civilizations both human and machine that have grown from the ruins of the old world.

Gameplay takes place from an isometric viewpoint, with the player guiding Mark across desolate landscapes, ruined cities, and strange settlements. Exploration is the core activity, with areas presented as static screens filled with characters to meet, objects to examine, and paths to unlock. Movement is point-and-click, with a focus on discovering the world’s lore and solving environmental puzzles rather than fast-paced action.

Progression depends on gathering items, speaking to characters, and making choices that allow the story to advance. Many quests require finding key artifacts or negotiating with factions, and dialogue options influence how certain scenarios play out. Mark’s inventory holds the tools and quest items needed to bypass obstacles, while problem-solving often comes down to using the right item in the right place or persuading the right character to help.

Dialogue plays a major role in shaping the experience. Conversations are fully voiced, and branching choices allow the player to steer how Mark reacts to events and people. Decisions can affect alliances, determine how quests are resolved, and alter the outcome of the brothers’ journey. Instead of combat, tension arises from narrative stakes and the consequences of choices.
