About

Baby Steps is a physics-based walking simulator. It can be described as the spiritual successor to the earlier titles QWOP and Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy by one of the developers, emphasizing intentionally awkward movement and comedic physical challenges.

The game follows Nate, an unemployed and socially isolated man who unexpectedly embarks on a surreal hiking journey. Dressed in a stained onesie and lacking proper equipment, Nate attempts to climb a vast, mist-shrouded mountain while encountering unusual characters and humorous situations. Dialogue sequences, often improvisational in tone, introduce eccentric supporting figures such as Jim, who alternates between guide and antagonist. Despite its absurd premise, the narrative gradually reveals a more introspective side to Nate, combining humor with themes of failure and persistence.

Gameplay centers on fully simulated leg control, with each limb managed independently through analog triggers. Progress requires careful placement of steps, with small mistakes often sending Nate tumbling back down terrain. The control system, initially counterintuitive, contains hidden depth, with variables such as trigger pressure affecting step height and force transfer between legs. Stages feature varied environments including deserts, caves, frozen lakes, and derelict mines, each introducing new traversal mechanics and hazards.

The progression loop is structured around a continuous climb up the mountain. Players may choose between safer main routes or more difficult branching paths, which often lead to comedic cut-scenes or optional story elements. Failure is common, but setbacks are framed as part of the learning process, with skill mastery gradually unlocking smoother navigation. The game includes optional environmental challenges, puzzle-like traversal segments, and a dynamic soundtrack that evolves with movement.
