About

Arena Wars offers an unconventional mixture of RTS with FPS gameplay. Although something similar has been attempted with Savage, this game actually models its FPS part from multiplayer Arena-type titles, such as Quake III and UT2004. As a consequence, it has no real story and the RTS part is free from the usual resource constraints. All players have the same amount of money at their disposal and are refunded for destroyed units. However, the available unit selection is also somewhat limited. There are six types of units, all vehicular: mechs, light and heavy, an agile buggy, a missile launcher on wheels, a heavy tank and an artillery unit. Individual strengths and weaknesses aside, all units possess a special ability such as Teleport for tanks. The unit types form a predator-prey circle with each one being strong against a certain type and vulnerable against another.

The game offers modes or events that are the mainstay of arena FPS competitions: Capture the Flag, Bombing Run and Double Domination. Unreal Tournament's influence on the game is obvious here. Arena Wars builds on the inherent tactical elements of these games and leaves the actual combat to the AI. It contains over 60 single player missions spread in six tournaments and multiplayer games for up to 8 players. In multiplayer the game offers webcam and voice support.
