AI: The Somnium Files – nirvanA Initiative is a single-player adventure game. The story follows two investigators from the Advanced Brain Investigation Squad, Mizuki Okiura and Ryuki Kuruto, who are tasked with solving the Half Body serial killings. Victims are found cut in half, with the second half of their bodies appearing six years later in seemingly impossible circumstances. The game’s narrative alternates between two timelines, as the player uncovers how the murders are connected and what links them to a wider conspiracy known as Nirvana.

The game is structured as a mix of storytelling, exploration sequences, and interactive investigation segments. In dialogue and story scenes, players make choices that can influence the direction of events, unlocking different branches that lead to multiple possible outcomes. Investigations take place in real-world environments, where evidence is gathered, suspects are questioned, and small puzzles may be solved to push the case forward.

A major gameplay system is the Somnium mechanic, where the protagonists use an AI companion housed in a prosthetic eye to enter the dreamscapes of witnesses or suspects. In these dream environments, time is limited and every action consumes a portion of a countdown timer. Players must interact with distorted objects and overcome abstract logic puzzles to uncover hidden memories or truths that cannot be accessed through normal questioning. Successfully completing a Somnium sequence reveals new leads or branches in the investigation.

Combat does not feature prominently, but tense quick-time events and interactive sequences are used during certain story moments. Progression is instead tied to information gathering and branching routes, with a flowchart system allowing players to revisit earlier points in the story to explore alternate paths. Completing multiple routes is required to understand the full scope of the murder mystery.
