1953: NATO vs Warsaw Pact is a turn-based grand strategy game, following an alternative timeline after Stalin's death about a potential Cold War starting from 1953. The player can manage any chosen country from the 30 available, a combination of countries, or take take the lead over two opposing factions in a single game. The game aims to present a realistic political situation. All units, technology (including the A-bomb). diplomacy etc. are based on history. The game is very combat oriented as the player has very limited influence over economy.

There is a diplomacy system and a technology system with five areas of research, including upgrading obsolete technology to a new version. Other game elements are supply and demand, spending resources to acquire new units, repair, maintain and upgrade them, investing into research, strategic movement, different types of transport, a fog of war and a dynamic weather system. It is played on a full map of Europe with fragments of Asia, Africa and USA, with a hex-based layout.
