1000 Light-Years Away is a mouse controlled, single player, tile matching puzzle game with a sci-fi theme.
The game's story starts when a teddy-bear like guardian discovers his time machine has been stolen prompting him to set out to find it. The story is told in a series of chapters, each chapter starts with a couple of comic-book style screens which are followed by ten jewel match puzzle levels.
In story terms the jewel match levels are there so that the guardian can charge his weapons and spaceship. To do this the player must achieve two objectives per level. The first objective is to match specific numbers of one/some or all types of gem, the required targets are shown at the top of the screen in the centre. The number of gems needed increases as the player progresses through the game.
The second objective is to collect all the energy tiles. These are cells with a yellow background and they are collected when the cell is included in a matched group of gems.
There are weapons, player aids, they cost points to both unlock and to use and they do things like clear an entire row, destroy all tiles of a specified colour etc. Occasionally a meteor drifts across the screen and this gifts additional points when clicked on. Other meteors appear on tiles in some levels and block off parts of the game area until they are cleared.
